so my mom arrived here in LA to visit me for a few days today and since i last saw her, i acquired a jet black ibanez electric guitar from one of my friends. i brought it out into the living room to show my mom, along with the fender amp that my friend sold me as well and i set it all up. i've never played guitar a day in my life and my original plan was to have one of my other friends who lives in detroit teach me when i see her this summer while we go on tour. my mom asked to see the guitar closer, so i handed it up to her and she put the strap over her shoulder and started playing! i was like "hold up...you know how to play?!?!" and she replied "yeah. i learned a long time ago, but i still remember some stuff. i had a guitar at one point" and she proceeded to tune my guitar and play a few little melodies. i was blown away. after almost 19 years of living with my mom, i had no idea she knew how to play. and i said "you never told me you knew how to play!" my mom's response: "you never asked." i laughed, knowing she was right. she's offered to teach me how to play while she's here, and has announced that we're gonna need to make a trip to guitar center on sunset blvd. to get some books and such.

it just goes to show, you can spend your whole life with someone and just when you think you have them figured out, they surprise you.
